Virginia – Cold air settles heavily across Northern Virginia this morning, leaving rooftops stiff with frost and breath visible at every intersection. The chill feels stubborn, and winter shows little interest in letting go as February presses on.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures near Annandale dropped into the mid-20s early today, with calm winds allowing cold air to pool near the ground. Afternoon highs rebound only into the upper 30s, keeping conditions firmly below seasonal norms. Shaded roads and sidewalks may stay slick longer than expected.

Clouds increase later today, and a slight chance of snow develops this afternoon and evening. Any snow remains light, but timing matters. Even brief flurries could coat untreated surfaces just enough to create traction issues during the evening drive, especially along I-495, Route 50, and neighborhood streets.

Tonight stays cold, with lows returning to the mid-20s. Wednesday brings partial sunshine, though highs struggle to reach the low 30s. Any melting during the day may refreeze quickly after sunset, raising concerns for black ice through midweek mornings.

Thursday offers the brightest break, with sunshine and highs near 30 degrees. The calm does not last. By Friday, another system approaches, bringing a renewed chance of snow during the afternoon. Accumulations appear light, but even minor snowfall could impact travel ahead of the weekend.

Looking beyond, NOAA’s 6–10 day outlook suggests a gradual warming trend late next week across the Mid-Atlantic. Until then, winter conditions remain in control, and cold mornings continue.

Bundle up, allow extra travel time, and stay alert for slick spots after dark. Seeing icy roads where you are? Share conditions from your part of Northern Virginia.
