Blacksburg, Va. – Patchy drizzle and fog could slow early commutes Tuesday in Blacksburg and across the New River Valley before skies clear and temperatures climb near 80 by afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, increasing clouds Tuesday night will give way to a stronger storm threat by Wednesday afternoon, when scattered thunderstorms may bring heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and frequent lightning. Rain chances rise again Wednesday night into Thursday, with showers likely and the possibility of isolated thunderstorms continuing through late week.
Drivers along Interstate 81 and U.S. Route 460 should prepare for reduced visibility from fog early Tuesday and slick roads later in the week when storms roll through. Rainfall totals may reach half an inch or more in some areas, which could briefly flood low-lying spots.
Residents are urged to keep devices charged in case of power outages and avoid travel during periods of heavy downpours. Outdoor activities around Virginia Tech and throughout Montgomery County could see interruptions Wednesday and Thursday.
Conditions begin to ease by Friday, with skies turning partly sunny into the weekend and highs dropping back into the upper 70s.
