Richmond, Virginia – Temperatures across Virginia are expected to fall rapidly through the day Thursday, with rain showers potentially mixing with snow for a few hours this afternoon as colder air pushes into the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a cold front moving across Virginia this morning will cause temperatures to steadily decline through the afternoon. Some locations that start the morning in the 60s and even low 70s will drop into the mid-30s to lower 40s by late afternoon.

Cities including Richmond, Norfolk, Petersburg, Williamsburg, and Hampton Roads communities will see rain through much of the day. As colder air deepens during the afternoon, some areas may briefly mix with or change to wet snow before precipitation ends by early evening.

Forecasters say the transition is most likely during the late afternoon hours, though temperatures will remain marginal for significant accumulation. Most snow would melt on contact with roads and paved surfaces.

Drivers across central and eastern Virginia should still watch for reduced visibility during heavier showers, especially along major routes such as Interstate 64, Interstate 95, and U.S. 58.

The colder air mass settling into the region will keep temperatures chilly tonight, with readings hovering near the mid-30s across much of eastern Virginia as the system exits the region.
