Blacksburg, Virginia – Residents across Southwest Virginia are heading into a sharp weather swing that could drop temperatures by more than 35 degrees within 48 hours, bringing spring warmth this weekend before a sudden cold snap arrives early Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, temperatures will climb into the upper 50s to upper 60s Sunday and Monday across much of the region. Cities including Roanoke, Danville, Lynchburg, and Martinsville could see afternoon highs reach the mid to upper 60s, creating mild spring conditions.

The bigger concern arrives Monday, when a developing weather system could trigger thunderstorms across the region, some of which may become strong as the atmosphere destabilizes during the afternoon and evening hours.

Behind that system, temperatures will plunge quickly overnight. By early Tuesday morning, readings are expected to fall into the low to mid-20s in parts of the New River Valley and Appalachian Highlands, including Blacksburg, Boone, and Lewisburg. Even typically warmer locations like Roanoke and Lynchburg could wake up to temperatures in the low 30s.

The rapid temperature drop could stress early spring vegetation and create a brief return to winter-like conditions after several mild days.

Residents should monitor Monday’s storm potential and prepare for the colder air arriving overnight into Tuesday. Additional weather updates or advisories could be issued as the system approaches.
