RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia is expected to see a modest warming trend heading into Valentine’s Day weekend, though periods of rain and snow remain possible across the Commonwealth from Feb. 14 through Feb. 20.
High temperatures on Valentine’s Day are forecast to reach the mid-30s to low 40s across much of central and eastern Virginia, including Richmond. Overnight lows are expected to fall into the 20s and lower 30s, creating conditions favorable for occasional wintry precipitation, especially during nighttime and early morning hours.
Weather models indicate several weak systems moving through the region during the period. These systems are expected to produce light precipitation rather than widespread storms, but precipitation type will vary based on elevation and timing. Northern and western Virginia, particularly the Blue Ridge and higher elevations, may see periods of snow or a rain-snow mix, while southern and coastal areas are more likely to experience rain.
Any snowfall accumulations are expected to be light, but repeated freeze-thaw cycles could lead to icy patches on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses. Gusty winds at times may also contribute to reduced visibility during brief snow showers.
While temperatures will trend closer to seasonal averages, forecasters do not anticipate a sustained warm pattern. Virginians planning Valentine’s Day travel or outdoor activities should stay alert for changing conditions, as small temperature fluctuations could significantly affect impacts between Feb. 14 and Feb. 20.
