Richmond, Virginia – Gusty winds are set to become the main weather concern across central and eastern Virginia this afternoon and evening as colder air moves in behind a departing system.

According to the National Weather Service office in Wakefield, sustained winds will increase to 20 to 25 mph this afternoon, with gusts ranging from 30 to 35 mph and occasional gusts approaching 40 mph. The strongest winds are expected from mid-afternoon into the evening hours before gradually easing late tonight into early Monday morning.

The impacts will be felt across a wide area, including Richmond, Petersburg, Williamsburg, Fredericksburg, and Hampton Roads. Along the Interstate 95 and Interstate 64 corridors, gusty conditions could make driving more difficult for high-profile vehicles, especially on exposed bridges and open roadways. Coastal areas and the Eastern Shore may also see persistent gusts that can shift unsecured outdoor objects.

Residents are encouraged to secure trash cans, decorations, and other loose items that could be blown around. Power outages are not expected to be widespread, but isolated issues are possible where winds are strongest.

Temperatures will trend colder through the evening as the wind continues, adding an extra chill to outdoor activities. Winds should gradually diminish overnight, setting up a calmer start to Monday morning. Additional advisories may be issued if wind speeds increase beyond current expectations.
