Blacksburg, Virginia – Powerful northwest winds and accumulating mountain snow are creating hazardous conditions across southwest Virginia today, with threats ranging from downed trees to slick roads in higher elevations.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, sustained winds of 15 to 25 mph are expected today, with gusts exceeding 50 mph along and west of the Blue Ridge, especially across the mountains and the New River Valley. A Wind Advisory is in effect for much of the region west of the Blue Ridge, including the NC High Country, where loose objects may be blown around and isolated power outages are possible.
At the same time, snow showers are developing this morning across the mountains. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for western Greenbrier County, where 2 to 4 inches of snow could accumulate. Elsewhere, including areas from Boone to Lewisburg and west, up to an inch of snow is expected, with slick conditions likely on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses.
The strongest impacts are expected along mountain routes such as U.S. 219, U.S. 460, and portions of I-64 and I-77. Drivers are urged to slow down, secure vehicles from crosswinds, and use caution on snow-covered roads.
Winds are expected to gradually weaken after sunset, and snow showers should taper off tonight. Additional advisories may be issued if conditions worsen.
