Williamsburg, VA – A strong thunderstorm is moving through southeastern Virginia this evening, bringing wind gusts of up to 50 mph and the potential for minor damage. The storm is expected to impact several counties, including Charles City, Southampton, Prince George, York, Sussex, Surry, and James City, as well as the city of Williamsburg, through 7:30 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, Doppler radar detected the storm over Sussex around 6:52 p.m., moving northeast at 55 mph. Forecasters warn that strong wind gusts could knock down small trees and unsecured objects and create hazardous conditions for high-profile vehicles.

Communities in the storm’s path include Homeville by 6:55 p.m., Waverly by 7:00 p.m., Cabin Point by 7:15 p.m., and Claremont by 7:20 p.m. Other affected areas may include Chippokes State Park, Lackey, Yale, and Spring Grove.

Residents in these areas are advised to seek shelter indoors until the storm passes. If traveling, exercise caution, especially in open areas where wind impact may be stronger.

The storm is not expected to produce hail but could result in localized power outages due to fallen branches. The National Weather Service continues to monitor conditions and urges residents to stay updated on any further alerts.
