Virginia – A soft rumble of thunder and a few stray raindrops mark the start of a weather shift across coastal Virginia this morning. The last streak of unsettled air will clear out quickly, leaving behind drier skies and a cooler breeze just in time for Thanksgiving travel.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a few spotty showers may linger through the morning before skies brighten this afternoon. Temperatures will climb near 70°F across Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Chesapeake, unseasonably warm for late November. Winds will gradually turn west and strengthen through the day, signaling a cold front’s approach.

By Thanksgiving Day, the front’s passage will bring a noticeable change. Sunshine returns, but highs will fall back to the low 50s—nearly 20 degrees cooler than Wednesday’s warmth. A brisk northwest wind could gust up to 20 mph, keeping the air crisp for morning parades and coastal walks.

For travelers, conditions along I-64, Route 13, and I-264 look smooth through the holiday. Visibility will be excellent, and no major weather-related delays are expected through Friday. Those decorating for the holidays or planning outdoor gatherings will find ideal conditions—dry air, blue skies, and mild afternoon sun.

Looking into the weekend, temperatures stay cool and comfortable. Friday brings highs in the mid-40s, Saturday around 46°F, and Sunday near 60°F with increasing clouds. Light rain may return late Sunday night into Monday, hinting at a wetter start to December.

Nationally, forecasters are monitoring a major Arctic front expected to surge south between December 1–5, potentially bringing heavy snow and below-normal temperatures to large portions of the U.S.
