Richmond, Virginia – A surge of winter cold is spreading across Virginia as the winter solstice arrives Sunday, bringing longer nights, reduced daytime heating, and a heightened risk of frozen pipes for Richmond and surrounding communities.

According to the National Weather Service and Virginia Department of Emergency Management, extended periods of below-freezing temperatures across central Virginia are increasing the likelihood of pipes freezing and bursting, particularly in older homes, apartments, and structures with plumbing in crawl spaces or along exterior walls.

In Richmond, residents are advised to insulate exposed pipes in basements, garages, and under sinks, especially in unheated areas. Allowing faucets to drip slowly overnight can help keep water moving and reduce freezing risk. Opening cabinet doors beneath sinks allows warmer indoor air to circulate around vulnerable plumbing.

Virginia fire officials caution residents never to use blowtorches, propane heaters, kerosene devices, or any open flame to thaw frozen pipes. These methods significantly increase fire danger and can damage pipes, leading to sudden flooding once ice clears. Knowing the location of the main water shut-off valve can help minimize damage if a pipe bursts.

As Richmond and the rest of Virginia move deeper into winter following Sunday’s solstice, officials stress that early preparation can prevent costly repairs. Additional cold weather advisories could be issued if freezing temperatures persist into early next week.
