Richmond, Va. – Light rain will spread across central and eastern Virginia today, but the real soaking begins overnight, with as much as 3 inches of rain expected in some coastal areas by Thursday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, scattered showers will continue through Tuesday afternoon, with highs only reaching the low to mid-60s inland and near 70°F along the coast. Rainfall is forecast to intensify late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, with widespread totals between 1 and 2 inches—localized amounts near 3 inches are possible in Accomac, Salisbury, and Elizabeth City.
Drivers in Norfolk, Richmond, and Williamsburg should prepare for slow commutes Wednesday as heavier rain bands move through. Urban flooding may impact low-lying roads and drainage-prone intersections. South Hill, Farmville, and Petersburg are also in line for over an inch of rain, which may lead to ponding on rural routes.
Residents should avoid unnecessary travel during peak rainfall Wednesday morning and check local alerts for any flood advisories. Charge mobile devices, clear storm drains, and secure outdoor items.
Rain is expected to taper by Thursday afternoon, but lingering showers and cloud cover will keep conditions damp. Additional weather statements may be issued if rainfall exceeds early projections.
