Blacksburg, VA – Southwest Virginia residents should prepare for a shift in weather this week, with showers and storms expected to return by midweek and temperatures trending cooler toward the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a slow-moving upper-level low pressure system will bring unsettled conditions across the region beginning Wednesday, September 24. Rain chances climb sharply midweek, with Boone, NC seeing up to a 70% chance of precipitation, while many Virginia communities including Roanoke, Lynchburg, and South Boston face 55–65% chances Thursday and Friday.

Temperatures will also fall as the wet weather sets in. Early in the week, highs reach the mid-to-upper 80s in cities such as Danville, South Boston, and Roanoke. By Thursday and Friday, however, most areas—including Blacksburg, Lexington, and Wytheville—will see highs only in the low 70s. Boone and Bluefield are expected to dip into the upper 60s, the coolest readings of the week.

The National Weather Service notes that conditions are likely to stay unsettled into Saturday, September 27, with lingering rain chances around 50% across much of the region. Cooler air will remain in place through the weekend.

Residents should plan ahead for potential travel delays during storms and keep an umbrella handy, especially for commutes later in the week.
