BLACKSBURG, Virginia – A crisp, starlit sky stretched over the Blue Ridge early Wednesday, the kind that makes every sound sharper and the air feel cleaner. Fall has fully taken hold across the New River Valley, and by Friday morning, parts of Southwest Virginia could see their first patchy frost of the season.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, clear skies and light winds will create near-perfect cooling conditions late Thursday into Friday morning. Temperatures will dip into the low 30s across valleys from Christiansburg to Giles County, with frost likely in sheltered areas. Motorists heading along Route 460 or I-81 during the early commute may notice frosty windshields or thin glaze on car roofs. Gardeners and growers should cover sensitive plants and disconnect outdoor hoses before Thursday evening.

High pressure remains dominant through the end of the week, bringing several days of sunshine and light breezes. Afternoon highs will stay near 57°F on Wednesday and Thursday, climbing slightly into the upper 50s Friday as calm, dry air settles in. Despite the chill, the weather will stay ideal for outdoor work, home projects, and fall cleanup ahead of Halloween week.

The weekend will feature mild days and cool nights, with highs near 59°F and lows in the upper 30s. By Sunday, thin clouds may filter in, but no rain is expected through early next week.

For now, the New River Valley sits under the calm after autumn’s first real cold push—a stretch of bright, chilly days and clear, frosty mornings that feel like the doorstep of winter.
