Virginia Beach, Va. – Bright breaks of sunshine are already giving way to building clouds along the coast this Monday morning. The air feels tropical, the humidity is climbing, and scattered storms will become increasingly common through the week. While today won’t be a washout, the weather turns much more active by Tuesday and especially Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, eastern Virginia faces a growing chance for thunderstorms through midweek. Some storms from Monday afternoon through Wednesday may produce damaging wind gusts and locally heavy rainfall. The Hazardous Weather Outlook also notes the potential for isolated severe thunderstorms during this period.

Monday brings a high near 83 degrees with a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms developing after late morning. Most communities will still see dry stretches, but any storm could briefly reduce visibility and create ponding on roads. If you’re heading to the beach or commuting on I-64, I-264, Independence Boulevard, or Shore Drive, keep an eye on the sky during the afternoon.

The weather becomes more unsettled Tuesday. Highs climb to around 90 degrees, while the heat index may reach 102 degrees before scattered thunderstorms become more widespread during the afternoon and evening. Rain chances increase to 60% Tuesday, then 70% Tuesday night, with locally heavy rainfall possible.

Wednesday appears to be the most impactful day of the week. Rain chances rise to 90%, with numerous showers and thunderstorms expected. Gusty winds, frequent lightning, and periods of heavy rain could disrupt travel and outdoor activities. Some locations may receive three-quarters of an inch to one inch of rainfall, with locally higher totals where storms repeatedly develop.

By Thursday, scattered showers remain possible with a 70% chance of rain before conditions gradually improve later in the week. Keep phones charged, monitor updated weather alerts, and be prepared to move indoors quickly if thunderstorms approach.
