Norfolk, VA – Coastal communities along the James River and lower Chesapeake Bay may see moderate tidal flooding beginning Wednesday evening as persistent northeast winds continue through the week.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wakefield, building winds are expected to push water levels higher starting late Tuesday, with the most significant flooding risk during high tides Wednesday through Friday. Areas most at risk include southside Hampton Roads, where residents are urged to prepare for localized roadway flooding and travel disruptions.

The NWS notes that no coastal flooding is expected Tuesday, but conditions will worsen by midweek. Moderate flooding, which can bring water onto roadways and into vulnerable neighborhoods, is most likely along tidal rivers and the lower bay. While impacts are not expected to reach major flood thresholds, the agency advises residents in flood-prone areas to remain alert and monitor forecasts closely.

Tidal flooding is a recurring issue for coastal Virginia during prolonged northeast wind events, particularly in low-lying areas near Norfolk, Newport News, Portsmouth, and Hampton. Commuters and businesses in those regions may experience detours or temporary closures during peak tide cycles.

Flooding concerns are expected to taper off by the weekend as winds weaken and water levels recede.
