Blacksburg, VA – A light wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain is expected to move into the mountains of southwest Virginia late Saturday night, potentially causing slick travel conditions into Sunday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, precipitation will begin as a mix of light rain and freezing rain before transitioning to plain rain later Sunday morning as temperatures rise. The highest risk for icing is forecast near and north of Highway 60, including parts of Amherst County, VA, and adjacent areas in West Virginia.

The Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for affected areas, cautioning that even a light glaze of ice—generally less than one-tenth of an inch—could make untreated roads and sidewalks hazardous. Motorists and pedestrians are urged to use caution, especially during the early morning hours when bridges and elevated surfaces may freeze first.

By late morning, precipitation is expected to change to rain as temperatures climb above freezing, improving road conditions across most of the region.
