According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, showers with embedded storms will continue through the morning, followed by a second round of stronger storms between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. The main threats include wind gusts of 45 to 60 mph, quarter-sized hail, and isolated tornadoes.
Cities including Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Suffolk, and Elizabeth City could see intense weather conditions by early afternoon. Areas along U.S. Route 17 and near the North Carolina border should stay alert for rapid changes in weather. Emergency officials urge residents to secure loose outdoor items, charge electronic devices, and review tornado safety plans.
The Albemarle Sound region faces the highest risk for severe activity, with brief but intense storms possible. Today’s threat level remains “Slight” on the national scale, indicating isolated but potentially dangerous storms.
