Washington, D.C. — A powerful winter storm is set to bring heavy snowfall and dangerous road conditions to the Washington, D.C., metro area, including Northern Virginia and parts of Maryland, through Wednesday morning. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning from 1 p.m. Tuesday to 7 a.m. Wednesday, with snow accumulations expected to reach 4 to 8 inches south and west of D.C.
According to the National Weather Service, snow will begin Tuesday afternoon, with the heaviest accumulation occurring in the evening. Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are expected, reducing visibility and making travel hazardous, particularly along I-95, I-66, and the Beltway. A wintry mix of freezing rain and sleet may develop overnight into early Wednesday.
Drivers should avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for slow commutes on Wednesday morning. If travel is required, carry an emergency kit, including a flashlight, food, and water. Road conditions can be checked by dialing 511.
Looking ahead, temperatures will rise to 50°F on Thursday, with a chance of rain, before turning sunny and cold again Friday.
