Blacksburg, VA – Heavy rain will sweep across Virginia today, increasing the risk of flooding in several areas. A flood watch remains in effect through early Saturday, with the highest rainfall expected north of U.S. 460.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, heavier downpours will impact the Roanoke and Southern Shenandoah Valleys. Rainfall totals could reach 2-3 inches in northern areas, while central regions may receive up to 1.5 inches.

Forecasters warn that excessive rainfall, combined with snowmelt, may cause rivers and streams to overflow. Roads, properties, and low-lying areas face the greatest flooding risk. The most severe flooding may occur early Saturday as small streams transition into potential river flooding.

Drivers should remain cautious, as rising water could make some roads impassable. Residents in flood-prone areas should stay alert and monitor weather updates.

More showers are expected this afternoon and evening before conditions improve over the weekend. Officials urge residents to avoid flooded areas and prepare for possible evacuations if conditions worsen.
