Roanoke, Va. – Heavy downpours and gusty winds could impact much of central and southern Virginia this afternoon, as forecasters warn of flash flooding and scattered storm damage from 2 p.m. through 9 p.m. Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a marginal risk for severe thunderstorms and excessive rainfall stretches across the Virginia Piedmont and parts of central Virginia, including cities like Lynchburg, Danville, and South Boston. Saturated soils from recent rain could increase the risk of localized flooding, particularly near creeks and low-lying roads.
Storms may develop quickly and bring wind gusts strong enough to down tree limbs and power lines. Motorists on routes such as U.S. 29 and U.S. 460 should use caution and avoid driving through water-covered roads. Power outages and ponding are possible during heavy downpours.
Residents are advised to monitor alerts, secure outdoor items, and charge electronic devices in case of outages. Avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm hours this evening.
Rain chances taper off late tonight, but additional storm chances may return early next week.
