Norfolk, VA – A strong weather system moving across eastern Virginia is bringing waves of heavy rainfall and embedded thunderstorms to the region, with risks continuing through 6 p.m. Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, rain will spread across the area throughout the morning, followed by more intense thunderstorms into the afternoon. These storms could become severe, with the potential for brief tornadoes, wind gusts between 50–65 mph, and localized flooding in urban and low-lying areas. A Flood Watch is currently in effect.
The marginal severe weather risk extends across much of southeastern Virginia, impacting cities including Richmond, Williamsburg, Virginia Beach, and Norfolk. Forecasters express moderate-to-high confidence in the coverage of severe weather, though timing remains moderately uncertain. Residents are urged to stay alert and monitor local alerts.
Drivers are reminded to turn headlights on when using windshield wipers, as visibility may be reduced in heavier downpours and road spray. Poor drainage areas may see standing water, posing hydroplaning risks and temporary road closures.
Rainfall totals could exceed 1 inch in parts of the Tidewater region. Residents are advised to avoid flooded roads and to prepare for rapidly changing conditions throughout the day.
