Blacksburg, Va. – Heavy rain could drench Southwest Virginia just in time for Father’s Day weekend, raising the risk for localized flooding from Roanoke to Danville starting Saturday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a Limited Risk for excessive rainfall is in place from 8 a.m. Saturday, June 14, through 8 a.m. Sunday, June 15. Widespread showers and storms could drop several inches of rain across central and southern Virginia, particularly along the I-81 and US-220 corridors.
Cities including Blacksburg, Lynchburg, Martinsville, and Wytheville are in the risk zone, where saturated ground and persistent rainfall could overwhelm small streams and urban drains. Travel delays, washed-out roads, and power outages are possible in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Motorists should avoid driving through standing water and be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions.
With many planning outdoor events for Father’s Day, residents are urged to monitor local alerts, charge mobile devices, and secure loose outdoor items ahead of the rain.
The excessive rainfall risk ends early Sunday, but unsettled conditions may linger into early next week. More advisories could be issued depending on storm development.
