Blacksburg, VA – Virginia residents east of the Blue Ridge are facing dangerously high heat this Tuesday as the heat index surges to 105°F in Caswell, Halifax, and Charlotte counties, prompting a Heat Advisory for the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, the advisory will remain in effect until 8 p.m., with heat indices from 95°F to 105°F likely across the Piedmont and Southside. Areas including South Boston, Charlotte Court House, and nearby communities will experience the most intense heat, raising concerns for outdoor workers, travelers, and vulnerable populations.

Major roadways such as US-58, VA-92, and secondary rural routes in the advisory area could see slower traffic as drivers seek relief from the oppressive afternoon sun. Residents are urged to avoid strenuous outdoor activities, take frequent breaks in air-conditioned spaces, and drink plenty of water. Emergency officials stress never to leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, even for a few minutes.

Today’s heat event ranks among the hottest so far this summer and may bring the first weather-related disruptions of July. With humidity intensifying the effect, extra caution is advised, especially for older adults and those with health conditions.

The Heat Advisory remains active until 8 p.m. More advisories could follow if high temperatures persist through midweek.
