Richmond, Virginia – Summerlike heat is expected to build rapidly across Virginia, with temperatures climbing toward the 90s during the April 1–7 period as a powerful heat dome expands across the Mid-Atlantic.

According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, a strong high-pressure system is settling over the eastern United States, creating a heat dome that traps hot air near the surface. As air sinks beneath this system, it compresses and warms, pushing temperatures 20 to 30 degrees above normal for early April.

In Richmond and surrounding areas, afternoon highs could approach or exceed 90°F, with cities including Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and Roanoke also seeing a stretch of unseasonably hot conditions. Overnight lows will remain elevated, limiting cooling relief and increasing early demand for air conditioning.

The heat dome suppresses cloud formation, allowing intense sunlight to heat the ground throughout the day. This reduces the likelihood of widespread rainfall, though isolated showers may develop along the edges of the system.

The early-season timing of this heat raises concerns, as many homes and public spaces are not yet prepared for sustained warmth. Residents should stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon heat, and check on vulnerable populations.

This heat dome is expected to persist through April 1–7, with additional advisories possible if temperatures trend higher or approach record levels across the state.
