Blacksburg, Va. – A wintry mix of precipitation is expected to move into southwest Virginia Monday night, bringing a period of freezing rain that could make for hazardous travel conditions early Tuesday. The National Weather Service in Blacksburg reports that ice accumulations between one and two tenths of an inch are possible, mainly along and west of the Blue Ridge. Locally higher totals may occur in elevated areas.
Freezing rain is forecast to begin late Monday evening and continue into early Tuesday morning before temperatures gradually rise above freezing. The greatest concern is for slick roads, bridges, and sidewalks during the morning commute.
Forecasters note that there is still uncertainty regarding how long cold air will linger near the surface—if it persists longer, ice totals could increase; if it moves out sooner, amounts may be lower.
Residents are urged to monitor updated forecasts, allow extra time for travel Tuesday morning, and use caution on untreated or elevated surfaces.
