Charlottesville, Virginia – A light but impactful mix of freezing rain and sleet will move across central Virginia early Tuesday, creating slick roads in Fluvanna and western Louisa counties before gradually improving by late morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 1 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday. Most areas will see a glaze of ice with less than a half inch of sleet or snow, but even a thin coating will be enough to make roads hazardous during the morning commute.

Drivers traveling along U.S. 15, U.S. 250, and local routes connecting Palmyra, Kents Store, and Louisa should expect icy patches on bridges, shaded curves, and untreated rural stretches. Temperatures hovering near freezing will make it difficult for crews to improve conditions quickly before sunrise.

Virginia transportation officials urge motorists to reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance, and avoid abrupt lane changes. Pedestrians should also use caution on sidewalks and steps, where light ice may be difficult to see.

Conditions will gradually warm by late morning, changing precipitation to plain rain and improving travel. The Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m. Tuesday.
