Virginia–Maryland–DC Region – Streetlights glisten over damp pavement early this morning as a thin glaze of ice forms on roads, sidewalks, and bridges across the I-95 corridor. With temperatures hovering near 32°F, even light drizzle is turning slick from Arlington to Manassas and northward through central Maryland.
The National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington has issued a Winter Weather Advisory, in effect until 7 a.m. EST Saturday, warning of freezing drizzle and patchy fog. While ice accumulations will stay light—around a trace glaze—even a thin film can make untreated roads and overpasses treacherous during early travel.
Meteorologists caution that any melted snow or moisture will refreeze as surface temperatures dip into the upper 20s, creating black ice conditions before dawn. Drivers along I-66, I-95, and Route 50 should reduce speed, avoid sudden stops, and allow extra space between vehicles. Pedestrians are urged to watch for slick sidewalks and parking lots, particularly in shaded areas.
By midmorning, gradual warming will ease the freeze, leaving a dry, partly sunny day with highs in the low 40s. Sunday will stay mild and quiet, but early next week looks colder again with lows in the upper teens to low 20s by Tuesday morning.
Forecasters note the broader December 11–17 window may bring another winter pattern shift, as colder northern air dips south—possibly setting up more freezing rain or flurry chances for the mid-Atlantic.
