VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – A damp breeze rolls in from the Atlantic this morning, carrying the smell of salt and change. After a mild start to the week, a sharp November cold snap will sweep through Virginia, signaling the first widespread freeze of the season by Tuesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Freeze Watch takes effect Monday evening through Tuesday morning for much of central and eastern Virginia, including Hampton Roads, Norfolk, Chesapeake, and Virginia Beach. Subfreezing temperatures in the upper 20s to low 30s are expected, ending the growing season across the Tidewater and into northeast North Carolina.

Rain and isolated thunderstorms will develop today, followed by a cooler, breezy Monday as a strong cold front crosses the region. Winds from the northwest could gust above 25 mph near the coast. A brief window of rain mixed with snowflakes is possible inland late Monday night as temperatures tumble toward freezing.

Residents should take steps now to protect pipes, plants, and pets. Cover tender vegetation, disconnect hoses, and wrap exposed plumbing before the chill sets in. Drivers should also prepare for frost-covered windshields during early commutes Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.

Veterans Day brings bright sunshine and calmer winds, though the air will stay brisk with highs near 48°F. The region slowly warms midweek, climbing into the upper 50s by Thursday.

This marks a true seasonal turning point for coastal Virginia — a dramatic swing from humid fall afternoons to crisp, biting mornings that signal winter’s steady approach. By next weekend, residents can expect milder days but colder nights as November’s chill firmly settles in.
