Richmond, VA – Dense fog and the first round of snow are expected to disrupt travel across southern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina through Monday evening. Drivers on major roadways like I-64 and I-95 should use extreme caution as visibility drops below a quarter mile this morning.
According to the National Weather Service, fog will begin lifting by mid-morning, but rain transitioning to snow later today will create slippery road conditions. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for central Virginia, northern Virginia, and Washington, D.C., with 1 to 3 inches of snow expected by 7 p.m. tonight.
Monday brings a break with sunny but frigid conditions, with highs near 23°F and wind gusts reaching 30 mph. However, dangerously cold wind chills will persist, dropping temperatures as low as 5°F overnight. Snow may return Tuesday night into early Wednesday, with light accumulations possible across the region.
Residents are urged to slow down, keep headlights on low beam, and allow extra travel time on foggy or snow-covered roads. Prepare for cold conditions by protecting pipes, pets, and outdoor equipment from freezing temperatures expected Monday night through Wednesday.
Additional snowfall or icy patches may affect travel later in the week. Stay updated on road conditions via 511 Virginia and monitor forecasts for developing changes.
