Richmond, Virginia – Drivers along the I-95 corridor from Richmond to Fredericksburg could face flash flooding and hazardous road conditions through 10 p.m. Monday as heavy rainfall and strong thunderstorms move across central Virginia.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Flood Watch remains in effect for the Piedmont region and I-95 corridor, where saturated ground from recent storms increases the risk of rapid runoff. Scattered storms are expected from noon to 10 p.m., with intense rainfall rates of 1–2 inches per hour possible in localized areas.

Urban flooding, poor drainage issues, and road closures may develop quickly, especially near creeks, streams, and underpasses. A ‘Slight Risk’ for excessive rainfall covers most of the region, while a ‘Marginal Risk’ for damaging wind gusts up to 45 mph extends across the Piedmont.

Residents in Charlottesville, Ashland, Petersburg, and Emporia should avoid low-lying roads and charge electronics ahead of any power disruptions. The storms are expected to move slowly southeast, heightening flooding risk in already saturated areas.

The flood threat will persist into Tuesday, with additional advisories possible depending on rainfall totals overnight.
