Virginia residents face a soggy Saturday as heavy rain spreads across the region, raising the risk of flash flooding on key roadways. Travel along I-64 and other low-lying routes could become hazardous as water quickly overwhelms storm drains and flood-prone areas. Officials urge drivers to stay alert and avoid attempting to cross flooded roads.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Flood Watch remains in effect through Saturday evening for much of eastern, south central, and southeast Virginia. Locations from Norfolk to Richmond, as well as Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, and Hampton Roads, may see excessive runoff leading to dangerous conditions on rivers, creeks, and urban streets.

Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Newport News should brace for showers and thunderstorms into tonight. Rainfall totals could range between a half-inch and one inch, with isolated higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Flood-prone neighborhoods, particularly those near poor drainage systems, should prepare for water pooling through Saturday.

Sunday brings some relief, with scattered showers early before partial clearing in the afternoon. However, rain chances return Monday with breezy northeast winds, which could make coastal travel difficult. Conditions improve midweek as drier and cooler air ushers in a breezy start to October.

Residents are advised to monitor local alerts and prepare for additional warnings if rainfall persists. Avoid unnecessary travel, especially near flood-prone roadways.
