Richmond, Va. – Localized flash flooding and damaging wind gusts are likely across central and eastern Virginia today, with storms expected to persist into Tuesday, especially along and west of the I-95 corridor.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop by early Sunday afternoon and continue into the evening. A Marginal to Slight Risk for excessive rainfall exists today and Monday, particularly across the Piedmont region, with localized rainfall rates capable of overwhelming drainage systems. Isolated severe storms could also bring 40–60 mph wind gusts.

Areas including Richmond, Farmville, South Hill, and Louisa are under the greatest threat for Sunday. On Monday, the risk zone expands to include the I-95 corridor and Northern Neck, where strong downpours could trigger flash flooding in low-lying or poorly drained areas. While widespread severe storms aren’t expected, any isolated cell could turn dangerous quickly.

Residents should avoid driving through flooded roads, secure outdoor items ahead of gusty winds, and monitor alerts from local emergency managers. Power outages and travel delays are possible in affected areas.

Storm chances ease slightly by Tuesday, though scattered thunderstorms remain possible across the region. Additional advisories may be issued if storm activity intensifies.
