Richmond, VA – Severe storms and flash flooding could bring hazardous conditions across Virginia late Wednesday, with the greatest impacts expected between 4 p.m. and midnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Flood Watch is in effect this afternoon through early Thursday. Rainfall totals of 3 inches or more are possible in some areas, especially along the western half of the state. The highest flooding risk stretches from Lynchburg to Charlottesville, where storm coverage is expected to be widespread.
Scattered thunderstorms will develop late Wednesday afternoon and continue into the overnight hours. Some of these storms may turn severe, producing 60 mph wind gusts, localized flash flooding, and minor hail. The Slight Risk (Level 2) area includes much of central and southern Virginia, including Richmond, Petersburg, Farmville, and Fredericksburg.
Drivers are urged to avoid flood-prone roads, especially after dark. Residents should charge devices, have a way to receive emergency alerts, and prepare for possible power outages as storms roll through.
Storm coverage is expected to diminish after midnight, but additional advisories may be issued overnight into Thursday morning.
