BLACKSBURG, Va. – A cool, damp start to the Columbus Day holiday weekend could bring light rain and cloudy skies to Virginia’s New River Valley before warmer, sunnier weather returns by midweek.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, scattered rain showers may develop Sunday and linger into Monday morning, especially along and east of Interstate 81. Though rainfall totals are expected to remain under a tenth of an inch, slick roads could impact early holiday travel and local pumpkin patch events. Motorists should reduce speed on wet roads and allow extra travel time.

Sunday will see highs near the mid-60s under mostly cloudy skies. A north wind gusting up to 20 mph could make it feel cooler, signaling the season’s early fall chill. Columbus Day should start with a slight chance of showers before skies gradually clear, with highs in the upper 60s.

By Tuesday, Virginia’s fall warmth returns, with abundant sunshine and highs in the low 70s—ideal for leaf-peeping drives or outdoor school events resuming after the holiday. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the dry stretch to prepare gardens and cover sensitive plants ahead of cooler nights later in the week.

The rest of the week remains mild and bright, with another warming trend approaching Thursday before cooler air edges back toward the weekend.
