Richmond, Virginia – Extreme heat continues to grip much of Virginia today with temperatures pushing the heat index to a dangerous 111°F in parts of the state, while strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to develop by this evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect through tonight for the entire region, except for Maryland beaches such as Ocean City, where a Heat Advisory is active. Heat-related illnesses are more likely under these conditions, especially during peak afternoon hours. A Marginal Risk of severe weather also remains in place through Friday, with damaging wind gusts the primary concern.
Cities including Richmond, Norfolk, Petersburg, and Williamsburg may see isolated to scattered thunderstorms beginning late Wednesday afternoon, with the potential for some to become severe. Localized power outages and tree damage are possible if winds intensify. Residents are urged to stay indoors in air-conditioned spaces, avoid strenuous outdoor activity, and hydrate frequently. Lightweight, light-colored clothing is recommended.
While Thursday and Friday will remain hot, each afternoon brings another round of storm potential. Storm timing and intensity may vary, but damaging winds remain the key threat.
