Blacksburg, Va. – Drivers across southwest Virginia are waking up to dense fog this Sunday morning, reducing visibility to near zero in some areas, especially along rivers and low-lying valleys. Travel could be hazardous until the fog lifts by around 9 a.m., and motorists are urged to allow extra time on the roads.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, the fog is most persistent in Montgomery, Pulaski, and Giles counties, where humid air and calm winds have allowed conditions to thicken overnight. Travelers on Interstate 81 and U.S. Route 460 should watch for rapidly changing visibility and keep headlights on low beam to stay safe.

Once the fog clears, skies will turn mostly sunny with afternoon highs near 88 degrees. A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms develops late tonight, increasing into Monday with scattered storms possible after 2 p.m. The unsettled pattern continues through much of the week, with daily chances of thunderstorms, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours.

Motorists are advised to delay early trips if possible and check road conditions before heading out.
