Richmond, Virginia – A single rumble of thunder today is your signal to act immediately, as lightning can strike within 10 miles of storms across Virginia during the active spring and summer season.

According to the National Weather Service, lightning often reaches far beyond the heaviest rain, striking areas where skies may still appear partly clear. Across Virginia, warm-season instability fuels frequent thunderstorms from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Atlantic coast, especially during the afternoon and evening hours.

In Richmond, open areas like Brown’s Island, Belle Isle, and stretches along I-95 and I-64 quickly become high-risk zones when storms develop nearby. Virginia Beach faces elevated exposure along the Oceanfront and Chesapeake Bay shoreline, where flat terrain and water increase lightning vulnerability. In Roanoke, higher elevations along the Blue Ridge Parkway and areas near Mill Mountain create additional risk during fast-developing storms.

Lightning kills about 20 people annually in the United States, with many more suffering long-term injuries including neurological damage, memory loss, and cardiac complications. Many incidents occur during hiking, beach trips, and outdoor sports when thunder is ignored or storms appear distant.

If you hear thunder, you are already within striking distance. Move indoors immediately into a fully enclosed building or a hard-topped vehicle. Avoid open fields, ridgelines, and water. Wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunder before returning outside.

Storm chances will continue across Virginia through the season, with additional lightning alerts possible as conditions evolve.
