Wakefield, VA – The National Weather Service in Wakefield is monitoring a developing coastal low-pressure system that will impact eastern Virginia, northeast North Carolina, and the southern Chesapeake Bay region from late Monday through Wednesday.
Rainfall
Rain chances increase Monday evening through Tuesday morning, with periods of light to moderate rain continuing into Wednesday. While rainfall will be widespread, the overall flooding threat from rainfall remains low. The heaviest totals are expected near the coast, with lighter amounts farther inland.
Winds
Northeast winds will strengthen Monday night and persist through Tuesday, peaking Tuesday afternoon.
- Gusts up to 50 mph are possible along the Hampton Roads coast and northeast North Carolina.
- Inland areas can expect gusts between 25–35 mph.
- A Gale Watch and Small Craft Advisory are in effect for marine zones from Monday evening through Tuesday night due to hazardous boating conditions.
Tidal Flooding & Waves
Elevated water levels are expected along tidal rivers and coastal areas, especially during high tide cycles.
- Widespread minor tidal flooding is forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday.
- Localized moderate flooding could occur in the most vulnerable coastal locations.
- Large waves may lead to beach erosion and ocean overwash, particularly along the Outer Banks and Virginia Beach.

A second coastal system may impact the area late in the week (Wednesday night through Friday), bringing another round of rain and gusty winds.
