VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Strong onshore winds and rising tides will make for a rough and risky weekend along the Virginia coast, with coastal flooding and gusts nearing 35 mph expected through Sunday morning. The National Weather Service in Wakefield warns of potential flooding in low-lying neighborhoods and along major routes including U.S. 60 and Shore Drive, where water could cover portions of the roadway during high tide.
According to the National Weather Service, a Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 4 p.m. Sunday, with water levels 1.5 to 2 feet above normal in vulnerable bays and inlets. Beach Hazard Statements also continue through Friday evening due to strong rip currents and dangerous surf. Drivers and beachgoers are urged to avoid flooded roadways and stay out of the water until conditions improve.
Forecasters expect rain showers to increase Saturday afternoon as a fall cold front approaches from the west. By Saturday night, sustained easterly winds could reach 30 mph with higher gusts near the shoreline. Periods of heavy rain may lead to ponding on roads and minor drainage flooding in urban areas of Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and Chesapeake.
By Sunday, winds shift northwest as drier, cooler air filters in behind the system. Temperatures fall into the mid-60s early next week, signaling the season’s first taste of true fall air. Outdoor events and pumpkin patch visits on Monday and Tuesday should enjoy sunshine and lower humidity.
Residents should secure loose outdoor items, charge electronics, and plan for slower travel on coastal routes through Sunday.
