VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Gusty onshore winds and high tides are combining to cause minor coastal flooding across parts of Hampton Roads today, prompting a Coastal Flood Advisory in effect until 7 p.m. Tuesday. The National Weather Service in Wakefield warns residents along low-lying shorelines to expect some standing water near the bays and tidal inlets.

The advisory covers Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, and Virginia Beach, where up to one foot of water may inundate vulnerable coastal roads and parking lots. Gusts up to 30 mph will push water into the back bays during the afternoon high tide cycle. Residents are urged not to drive through flooded streets and to secure outdoor items near the shoreline.

According to the National Weather Service, patchy drizzle and light rain will continue through early afternoon, followed by improving conditions tonight as winds turn north. Skies clear rapidly Wednesday with temperatures near 65°F and drier air spreading across coastal Virginia.

Travelers on I-64 and U.S. 58 should use caution in areas prone to tidal flooding, particularly near the Lesner Bridge and along Shore Drive. By Wednesday afternoon, high pressure brings calmer weather, lower humidity, and bright Fall sunshine that will last through the weekend.

The late-week stretch will feature comfortable afternoons in the 60s and 70s and clear, cool evenings — ideal for outdoor events, leaf-viewing drives, and beach walks once tides recede.
