Blacksburg, VA – A multi-day pattern of strong thunderstorms and summer-like heat will settle over Southwest Virginia this week, bringing daily threats of heavy downpours and lightning starting Tuesday. Residents should prepare for potentially disruptive weather during the afternoon commute each day.

The most consistent activity arrives Tuesday, with thunderstorms developing after 11 a.m. and continuing into the evening. According to the National Weather Service, some of these storms could produce brief but heavy rainfall, impacting travel along Interstate 81 and U.S. Route 460. Drivers should remain alert for sudden changes in visibility and ponding on roadways. The high temperature on Tuesday is expected to reach 83 degrees.

The wet and unsettled weather is not a brief event. Showers and thunderstorms are also likely Monday afternoon, with a 70% chance of precipitation. The threat persists Wednesday with a high of 86 degrees and another round of afternoon storms. This pattern could complicate outdoor activities and requires residents to keep an eye on the sky.

For the Juneteenth holiday on Thursday, the morning will start mostly sunny, offering a brief break before showers and thunderstorms become likely after 2 p.m. Those with outdoor plans should prepare for possible interruptions. The high will be near 85 degrees.

Conditions begin to improve heading into the weekend. Friday and Saturday appear mostly sunny with highs in the low 80s, offering a much drier and more stable weather pattern.
