Blacksburg, VA – A major cold front is set to sweep through southwest Virginia starting Saturday, bringing snow and dangerously low temperatures. Residents are urged to prepare for icy road conditions and frigid weather expected to persist into early next week.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, mixed wintry precipitation will begin late Friday night, transitioning to light snow on Saturday morning. The heaviest snow accumulations, ranging from 1 to 3 inches, are expected Sunday as temperatures drop into the teens. Winds could gust up to 50 mph, creating hazardous driving conditions, particularly along I-81.

By Sunday night, temperatures will plunge to single digits, with a forecasted low of 5°F. Wind chills could make it feel even colder, especially in higher elevations. Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, will see highs barely reaching 8°F under mostly sunny skies.

Residents are advised to secure loose objects and use caution outdoors, as tree limbs may break due to high winds. Drivers should carry emergency kits and avoid unnecessary travel on untreated roads during peak storm conditions.

The extended forecast indicates a chance of snow showers early Tuesday, followed by clear but frigid weather into midweek. The National Weather Service recommends staying tuned for updates and using NOAA Weather Radio for real-time alerts.
