Blacksburg, Virginia – Temperatures are climbing fast enough to challenge records by midweek, with afternoon highs pushing into the 90s and creating early-season heat stress across southwest Virginia.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a prolonged stretch of dry weather will allow temperatures to run 15 to 25 degrees above normal through at least Wednesday. Highs reach the upper 80s by Monday afternoon, then surge into the low to mid-90s Tuesday and Wednesday in cities like Roanoke, Danville, and Lynchburg.

Danville could peak near 94°F by Wednesday afternoon, while Roanoke and South Boston approach the low 90s. Even higher elevations, including Blacksburg and Bluefield, are expected to climb into the 80s, well above seasonal averages.

The extended dry pattern reduces storm chances but increases fire risk and heat-related concerns, especially during peak afternoon hours. Roads and infrastructure will not see weather-related disruptions, but outdoor workers and students may feel the impact of prolonged sun exposure.

Residents should stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat, and check on vulnerable populations. The heat trend is expected to persist through midweek, with additional updates likely if record temperatures become more certain.
