Richmond, VA – Coastal Virginia was hit with heavy rain and strong winds this week as a coastal low-pressure system moved across the region, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wakefield.

Over the past 48 hours, rainfall totals reached as high as 8.3 inches in Norfolk, with much of Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore seeing 3 to 6 inches of rain. Lighter amounts, averaging less than 2 inches, were reported farther inland in areas such as Farmville and South Hill.

According to the NWS, the strongest wind gusts were also measured along the coast. Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and Accomack County recorded gusts between 45 and 50 mph, while inland locations such as Petersburg and Franklin saw gusts closer to 20–25 mph.

The combination of high rainfall and strong winds has raised concerns about localized flooding and power outages in low-lying areas, especially in Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore. Officials are advising residents to remain cautious when traveling, particularly near flood-prone roads and coastal routes.

Forecasters noted that while the storm has moved offshore, lingering impacts could continue through Wednesday evening in some coastal areas. The NWS recommends monitoring updates for any new advisories related to flooding or hazardous travel.

Residents are encouraged to report flooding or storm damage to local authorities and to avoid driving through water-covered roadways.
