Richmond, Virginia – Drivers across central and eastern Virginia could face dangerous travel conditions Monday afternoon and evening as a powerful cold front pushes through the region, triggering severe thunderstorms capable of producing 50 to 70 mph wind gusts and possible tornadoes.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, storms are expected to develop along and ahead of the cold front Monday afternoon and evening, moving northeast at 40 to 50 mph. The strongest storms could track across Richmond, Williamsburg, Norfolk, and Virginia Beach, with damaging winds identified as the primary hazard.

Forecasters warn that all severe weather hazards are possible, including large hail and brief tornadoes, particularly across southern Virginia where a Level 3 of 5 severe weather risk has been outlined. Areas farther north, including portions of the Northern Neck and Maryland’s Eastern Shore, remain under a Level 2 risk.

Heavy rain and sudden wind gusts could quickly reduce visibility for drivers along Interstate 95, Interstate 64, and U.S. Route 58, especially during the late-day commute Monday. Downed tree limbs and scattered power outages are also possible if the strongest storms develop.

Residents should review severe weather plans this weekend and ensure they have multiple ways to receive warnings Monday. Additional watches or advisories could be issued as the cold front approaches and confidence in timing increases.
