Roanoke, Virginia – Strong thunderstorms could develop within the next few hours, bringing the risk of damaging winds and hail that may disrupt travel and power across parts of Virginia through this evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, storms are expected to intensify this afternoon and evening, with the greatest severe risk focused across central Virginia. Wind gusts over 60 mph could down trees and power lines, while hail up to 1 inch in diameter is possible, especially north of US-460.

Areas including Roanoke, Lynchburg, and Danville are under a Level 1 to Level 2 severe threat, with higher impacts expected farther east. Roads such as US-220, US-460, and portions of I-81 could see sudden heavy rain, reduced visibility, and debris from strong wind gusts.

While storms will be scattered, any stronger cell could quickly become severe. Residents should secure outdoor items, charge devices, and ensure they can receive warnings via phone or NOAA Weather Radio.

Storm activity will taper later tonight, but additional updates or warnings may be issued as conditions develop.
