Front Royal, Virginia – Heavy snow could develop along the Blue Ridge as early as Sunday morning, with 5 inches or more possible before sunset.
According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Sunday morning through late Sunday night for the Northern and Central Virginia Blue Ridge. Snow accumulations of at least 5 inches are possible, with wind gusts up to 35 mph creating areas of blowing snow along higher elevations.
Road conditions may deteriorate quickly.
Skyline Drive, portions of Interstate 66 near Front Royal, and Route 33 across the Blue Ridge could become snow-covered by Sunday afternoon. Gusty winds may cause drifting snow and reduced visibility on exposed ridge tops into Sunday night.
Residents and travelers should prepare vehicles and consider adjusting plans before Sunday morning. Virginia Department of Transportation crews are expected to monitor mountain passes and pretreat primary routes ahead of the system.
Snow may taper late Sunday night, but slick spots could linger into early Monday morning. The Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Sunday morning through late Sunday night as forecasters refine snowfall totals and wind impacts.
