Blacksburg, Va. – Strong westerly winds are expected to sweep across much of Virginia today, with gusts reaching 35 mph or higher west of the Blue Ridge, while scattered afternoon showers remain a risk north of US-460.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, the heaviest morning rain has shifted east as low pressure exits the region. However, isolated storms could still pop up this afternoon, especially in the Eastern Piedmont and areas north of the U.S. 460 corridor. Rain chances persist in the western mountains through Friday due to upslope wind flow.
Residents in Roanoke, Lynchburg, and Martinsville may experience powerful wind gusts, especially near higher elevations. Drivers along I-81 and US-460 should be alert for sudden gusts that may impact high-profile vehicles.
Power outages and downed limbs are possible, particularly west of the Blue Ridge. Officials recommend securing outdoor items and avoiding unnecessary travel on exposed roadways.
Conditions are expected to gradually stabilize into Friday evening, though breezy weather will linger. Additional advisories may be issued if gusts increase or storms redevelop.
