Virginia – Temperatures are dropping quickly across inland Virginia tonight, setting up frost formation that could damage plants and create patchy slick spots by the early Thursday commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, lows will fall into the 30°F to 35°F range inland by early Thursday morning, with colder pockets dipping near or below freezing. Light winds will allow frost to develop efficiently, especially away from the immediate coastline.

Communities including Richmond, Petersburg, and areas along I-95 and I-64 could wake up to frost-covered surfaces. While major roadways should remain mostly dry, bridges and rural roads may see isolated slick spots where temperatures briefly touch freezing.

Sensitive vegetation is at the highest risk. Gardeners and growers should cover plants or bring them indoors before midnight. Outdoor pets and early morning commuters should also prepare for the chill.

Coastal areas, including Virginia Beach and Norfolk, will stay milder with lows in the low 40s, limiting frost potential closer to the shoreline.

By Thursday afternoon, conditions improve quickly with sunshine and a warming trend developing across the region. This marks the beginning of a gradual shift toward milder spring temperatures.

Additional frost or freeze advisories may still be issued, especially if temperatures trend colder overnight.
