Roanoke, Virginia – Gusty southwest winds will keep temperatures unusually warm overnight, limiting cooling and creating travel concerns through early Friday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, wind gusts between 20 and 30 mph will continue through the overnight hours across southwest Virginia, including Roanoke, Blacksburg, and Wytheville. These winds will prevent temperatures from dropping normally, with lows holding in the upper 50s to low 60s—roughly 20 to 30 degrees above seasonal averages.
Higher elevations along the Blue Ridge Parkway and Interstate 81 corridor could see the strongest gusts, occasionally topping 30 mph. Drivers of high-profile vehicles should use caution, especially on exposed ridges and bridges.
By Friday, a cold front begins to move into the region, bringing scattered rain and a shift toward cooler conditions. High temperatures will still reach the 60s in the mountains and low 80s across the Piedmont, including Lynchburg and Danville.
Residents should secure loose outdoor items tonight and prepare for changing conditions by the Friday morning commute. Additional updates are expected as the front approaches.
